Fuel & Mileage Calculator Guide

Understand km/L, fuel required and fuel cost with straightforward examples.

How to calculate mileage

Mileage tells you how far a vehicle travels for a given amount of fuel. In India it is commonly expressed as kilometres per litre (km/L).

Mileage (km/L) = Distance travelled (km) ÷ Fuel used (L)

Example

If a car travels 420 km and uses 28 litres of fuel, its mileage is 420 ÷ 28 = 15 km/L.

How to calculate fuel needed

Fuel needed (L) = Distance (km) ÷ Mileage (km/L)

For a 300 km journey in a vehicle returning 15 km/L, fuel needed is 300 ÷ 15 = 20 litres.

How to calculate fuel cost

Fuel cost = Fuel needed × Fuel price per litre

At ₹105 per litre, 20 litres costs ₹2,100.

How to estimate a road trip

For a return journey, use the total round-trip distance. Add tolls and other known expenses when building a complete trip budget. Dividing total expense by travellers gives an estimated cost per person.

Why real mileage can differ

Actual mileage varies with traffic, speed, load, tyre pressure, road conditions, weather, air-conditioning use and driving style. A useful comparison is to measure distance and fuel over several trips rather than relying on one short journey.

Use the Mileage Calculator for mileage calculations and the Fuel Cost Calculator for fuel expense estimates. When comparing km/L with other fuel-economy units, use the Fuel Efficiency Converter.
