1. Calculate fuel required
Start with the total distance and the vehicle's mileage. If the trip is a return journey, use the complete round-trip distance.
2. Calculate fuel cost
3. Add toll charges
Add the expected toll amount to the fuel expense. This gives a simple estimate of the main road-trip costs.
4. Split the cost
Example
Suppose a car travels 300 km one way, returns to the starting point, gives 15 km/L and fuel is ₹105/L. The round trip is 600 km. Fuel needed is 600 ÷ 15 = 40 litres, so fuel cost is 40 × ₹105 = ₹4,200. If tolls are ₹600, the estimated trip cost is ₹4,800. With four travellers, that is ₹1,200 per person.
Use the calculator
Enter your own distance, mileage, fuel price, tolls and number of people in the Trip Cost Calculator. For fuel-only planning, use the Fuel Cost Calculator; to work out mileage from fuel used, use the Mileage Calculator.
For a quick overview of mileage and fuel formulas, read the Fuel & Mileage Guide. You can also browse the Vehicle Calculators collection for EV, tire and fuel-efficiency tools.
These are estimates. Actual fuel consumption, fuel prices, tolls and route conditions can vary.
